Care Ministries in Desert Garden Church is an organization of trained members who have chosen to be of service by working with the homebound, disabled, ill, grieving, and lonely members. It is also an informational resource for those who request guidance and assistance in finding alternative housing, health care, social outlets, and counseling. There are many members who serve their church family through small group activities. These come under the umbrella of Care Ministries and include the following:
Low Vision - This group meets monthly for informational sessions on new equipment and devices, which may be of benefit to folks with Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, etc. Excellent speakers are also brought in.
Alzheimer's Men's Support is a group sponsored by an outside organization, which meets in our church once each month for husbands of women with Alzheimer's.
Our Flower Ministry delivers bouquets to our hospitalized and homebound members each week. These bouquets are made from the altar flowers from Sunday church services.
The Desert Garden Prayer Ministry receives a list via E-Mail or at the church each week or more often if necessary of people who have requested prayer for a loved one. Cards are sent out to all hospitalized members by a member of this group, and a cross suitable for carrying in one's pocket is sent the first time someone is in the hospital. Prayer request forms are available in the pews.
Our Card Ministry group makes beautiful handmade cards for use by the Prayer Ministry, the congregation birthday card mailing, and the Special Needs Team, as well as the Director of Care Ministries.
The Special Needs Team members each take one person who is unable to attend church regularly and makes contact with them each week with a card, a telephone call, or a visit.
Our Cookie Ministry delivers cookies, lap robes made by members, and spends time with our homebound members every other month. It is enjoyed by all parties involved.
The very active Singles on the Go group is made up mainly of widows and widowers in our congregation who enjoy having a social get-together each month on a Saturday afternoon. We play games and have a potluck dinner together.
The Arthritis Foundation exercise classes are held twice a week through much of the year. One of our members provides leadership and those who attend go away feeling better than when they arrived. The leader goes through special training for accreditation.
Training opportunities for new Care Ministers are provided twice each year, and consecration takes place during a church service upon completion.
